In 1968, we wore what we had, and we made it work. 1968 fashion was all about being comfy and lookin’ decent. We didn’t have no fancy stores in our neck of the woods.
1968 Clothes Fashion: What We Wore
Dresses was popular, yes siree. 1968 clothes were mostly these dresses that went down to your knees, sometimes longer. Not like them short skirts the young folks wear today. My oh my, no sir.
And colors! We liked colors. Bright ones. Yellow, pink, blue, green, you name it. We weren’t afraid of a little color, unlike today when all they wear is black, makes ’em look like they’re goin’ to a funeral.
- Dresses with big flowers on ’em, that was real popular.
- Long skirts, they was nice for church or when you had to go into town.
- Pants too, for workin’ in the yard or tendin’ to the animals.
We made a lot of our own clothes, you see. Sewing was a big thing. Every woman knew how to sew. We’d get together, share patterns, help each other out. That’s how we did things in 1968. We’d make clothes for the whole family. You had to be good at sewin’, it was the way it was.
And the hair, don’t get me started on the hair. 1968 fashion included these big hairdos. They’d tease it up real high, use a whole can of hairspray. Looked like a bird could nest in there.

For shoes, we mostly wore what was practical. Low heels, nothin’ too fancy. We had to walk a lot, you see. No cars for most folks. We had to walk to the store, to church, to visit neighbors. So, comfortable shoes was important.
And them young girls, the teenagers, they started wearin’ them platform shoes. Oh, I worried they’d break an ankle. But that was the style in 1968, I reckon. That was 1968 teen fashion, the platform shoes, big sunglasses, them young girls tryin’ to look older.
We didn’t have much jewelry, not like today. Maybe a simple necklace or some earrings for Sunday best. But we didn’t need all that to feel good. We had each other, that’s what mattered. And a good hat, a hat was always important for church, or for working outside, keep the sun out of your eyes. Some of them hats had yarn, yarn was “in” in 1968, it was everywhere.
That Flower Power Thing
Now, you might have heard of this “flower power” thing. That was goin’ on in 1968 too. The young folks, they wore these colorful clothes, with flowers and peace signs. They had long hair, both the boys and the girls. They called themselves “hippies” or somethin’ like that.
We didn’t really understand it, to be honest. But they seemed happy enough. They’d wear these bell-bottom pants, real wide at the bottom. And tie-dye shirts, all swirly and colorful. That was part of 1968 fashion too, I suppose. Even though we didn’t see much of it in our small town, we knew about it, heard it on the radio.
We kept wearin’ our regular clothes, though. We didn’t need no fancy stuff. We was happy with what we had. We had our families, our homes, and our gardens. That was enough for us. We didn’t need to be followin’ any special fashion.
