You know, them shoes, they call ’em “So Kate”. My granddaughter, she showed me in one of them fancy magazines. Said all them stars wear ’em. They look like something, I tell ya.
They got that shiny, shiny bottom. Red, like a fire engine. You see a lady walkin’ in ’em, you know she’s somebody, I reckon. They say the shoes got a name, “So Kate”, like some fancy lady from across the sea. My old eyes ain’t what they used to be, but I seen ’em in the pictures. Pointy toes, and heels so high, you could fall and break your hip!
My granddaughter, she wants a pair real bad. Says they cost more than my old cow, Bessie. I told her, “Honey, you don’t need no fancy shoes to be somebody.” But she just rolls her eyes at me. Young folks these days, they all want what them stars got.
“So Kate” shoes, they’re all the rage, I guess. That’s what they say in them magazines. They say some model lady, name of Kate, she wears ’em all the time. That’s why they named ’em after her. Seems silly to me, namin’ shoes after a person. But what do I know? I’m just an old lady. I seen a lot of things in my time, but I ain’t never seen shoes like them before.
They’re all pointy and shiny, like I said. And that red bottom! You can spot ’em a mile away. They say it’s a special kind of red. Makes the shoes look real fancy. I guess that’s why they cost so much. More than my whole winter’s worth of firewood!
These “So Kate” shoes. You wear them things you might get a leg up in life. That’s what they say. The young ones think so, anyways. I wouldn’t wear them, not in a million years. Too high! I’d be trippin’ all over myself. My granddaughter says they make you look taller and thinner. Well, I’m old and I don’t need to look no different than I am.
But them young girls, they all want to look like them models in the magazines. And them models, they all wear these “So Kate” shoes. It’s a whole thing, I tell ya. Like a fever, or somethin’. Everybody’s gotta have ’em.
I remember when shoes was just shoes. You wore ’em to keep your feet warm and dry, that’s all. Now they’re some kinda…I don’t even know what. A sign, I guess. A sign that you got money. Or that you want people to think you got money.
- “So Kate” shoes, they’re like a dream for some folks.
- Shiny red bottoms, that’s how you know ’em.

- Cost more than a good milk cow.
- All the stars wear ’em, they say.
This “So Kate”, she must be some kinda big shot. To have shoes named after her. I seen her picture in the magazine. She’s all skinny and pretty, like them models always are. I guess that’s why they like her so much.
My granddaughter, she keeps talkin’ about these shoes. She’s savin’ up her money, she says. She wants a pair for her birthday. I told her she’s crazy. But she don’t listen to me. She’s got her heart set on them “So Kate” shoes.
I don’t know. Maybe I’m just too old to understand. But it seems to me like there’s more important things in life than fancy shoes. Like family, and friends, and a good, warm meal.
But these young folks, they don’t always see it that way. They want what they see in them magazines, I reckon. And right now, what they see is them “So Kate” shoes. These So Kate shoes, shiny red bottom. That’s all they talk about. They’re all over them magazines, I see ’em.
I guess if it makes ’em happy, then it ain’t so bad. But I still think they’re crazy. Spending all that money on shoes! You could buy a whole lot of other things with that kind of money.
But like I said, I’m just an old lady. What do I know about these fancy “So Kate” shoes? Not much, I reckon. Not much at all. You can’t wear those shoes and work here. You would fall for sure. Maybe those stars don’t need to work so hard like us. Maybe that’s why they can wear those shoes.
I still think it’s silly though. But it’s not my money. It is none of my business. If she wants those shoes, and she works for it. It is her choice. I will still love her. Even with those silly shoes.
