Alright, so you got yourself a shirt, right? And it’s too darn big. Like, you could fit a whole ‘nother person in there with ya. Happens to the best of us. Don’t you worry none, I’m gonna tell ya how to shrink that shirt down to size.

First thing’s first, gotta figure out what kind of cloth that shirt’s made of. Is it one of them cottony ones? Or maybe somethin’ fancy like wool or silk? Cotton, that shrinks up good. Wool too. Silk, well, that’s a tricky one, don’t shrink as much.
Now, the easiest way, the way I always do it, is with hot water. Yep, just plain ol’ hot water. Get yourself a big pot, the kind you use for makin’ soup, and fill it up with water. Put it on the stove and get it boilin’ hot. Like, real hot, seein’ them bubbles jumpin’ around.
Once it’s boilin’, take it off the stove. Don’t wanna burn yourself now, do ya? Then, dump that shirt right in. Yep, just plop it in there. Let it sit for a good long while, maybe twenty, thirty minutes. Just let it soak in that hot water. That’ll teach that shirt to be so big and baggy.
- Boil Water: Big pot, real hot.
- Soak Shirt: Twenty to thirty minutes. Don’t burn yourself!
- Rinse and Dry: Cold water rinse, then air dry or machine dry.
After it’s soaked good, pull it out. Careful now, it’ll be hot! Rinse it out with some cold water, get all that hot water out. Then, you gotta dry it. You can hang it up outside, let the sun and wind do their thing. Or, if you’re in a hurry, you can throw it in the dryer. But be warned, the dryer makes it shrink even more. So if you don’t want it too small, just hang it up.
Now, if you’re worried about boilin’ the color out of your shirt, or if it’s one of them delicate ones, you can try the washin’ machine. Just put it in with your regular wash, but use the hottest water settin’. And then, when it comes to dryin’, same thing, use the hottest settin’. That’ll shrink it up some, but not as much as the boilin’ method.

Remember, different cloths shrink different amounts. That cotton stuff, that shrinks up a whole bunch. Wool, that shrinks pretty good too. But that silk, that’s a stubborn one. Might not shrink much at all. And don’t go thinkin’ you can turn a giant shirt into a tiny little thing. It’ll shrink, sure, but it ain’t magic. Maybe a size or two, that’s about it.
Shrinking clothes ain’t an exact science, ya know. It’s kinda like bakin’ a cake, sometimes it turns out perfect, sometimes it’s a little wonky. But most times, it works just fine. And if it shrinks too much, well, then you got yourself a shirt for the grandkids!
So there you have it. That’s how you shrink a shirt. It ain’t hard, just gotta be careful and pay attention to what you’re doin’. And if you’re still not sure, just ask your grandma, she probably knows a thing or two about shrinkin’ clothes. We old folks, we know all sorts of tricks.
One more thing, don’t go blamin’ me if you ruin your favorite shirt. I’m just tellin’ ya what I know. It’s up to you to be careful. And for heavens sake, do not boil that fancy silk shirt that you keep “for good”. You’ll be cryin’ for a month of Sundays! That kind of fabric you best take it to the cleaners. That’s what I do with my good Sunday go-to-meetin’ blouse!
Now go on and get that shirt shrunk! And don’t forget to drink your water, stay outta the sun, and call your mother once in a while!
