Okay, so, I wanted to share my experience about creating an op-ed piece. I’ve never really done anything like this before, but I thought it would be a cool thing to try. You know, to get my opinion out there and maybe make some kind of impact.

First, I started by reading up on what an op-ed actually is. It’s basically a short piece where you share your strong opinion on something that matters to people. Not just any random topic, but something relevant, you know?
So, I picked an issue that I’m really passionate about. Something that I think needs more attention and where I believe I have a unique perspective. Once I had my topic, I dove into research. I mean, you can’t just spout your opinion without having some facts to back it up, right? That’s what I learned.
Drafting My Piece
Then came the writing part. I started with an introduction that would grab people’s attention, something strong, you know? I wanted to make sure that right from the beginning, people would get what I was talking about and why it mattered. I also made sure to connect it to recent events to make it more relatable.
- I laid out the problem clearly, so there was no confusion about what I was addressing.
- Then, I provided some real-life examples. I figured this would help people see the issue in a concrete way. Not just some abstract concept, but something that’s actually happening.
- And of course, I stated my opinion on how things could be better. That’s the whole point of an op-ed, isn’t it? To offer a solution or a different way of looking at things.
Getting Feedback and Editing
After I had a draft, I asked some friends to read it. I needed some honest feedback, you know? They gave me some great suggestions, and I realized that some parts weren’t as clear as I thought. So I went back and revised those sections, added more details, and clarified some of my points. I had to cut out some parts to keep it straight and the point clear.
I also made sure to cite my sources. I mean, if you’re going to throw facts around, you need to show where you got them from. I learned that there are a couple of ways to do this, and I tried to do it in a way that didn’t interrupt the flow of the piece too much.

Submitting and Publishing
Finally, I looked into where I could submit my op-ed. I found a few publications that seemed like a good fit for my topic and style. I followed their submission guidelines carefully and sent it off. I was super nervous, not gonna lie. It’s a bit nerve-wracking putting your opinion out there for everyone to see and judge.
It took a while, but eventually, one of the publications accepted my piece! I was so excited! They worked with me on some final edits, and then it was published. Seeing my name and my words in print was such a cool feeling.
So yeah, that’s my op-ed story. It was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I feel like I learned a lot, and it was great to share my perspective on something I care about. I think everybody should give it a shot sometimes.
