Well, let me tell you, this internet thing is somethin’ else. My grandkids, they’re always on them phones, laughin’ at somethin’ called “memes.” Viral meme, they say. I asked ’em, “What in tarnation is a viral meme?” and they showed me. Now, I ain’t the sharpest tool in the shed, but I reckon I got the gist of it. It’s like them chain letters we used to get, but on the picture box.

So, these viral memes, they’re like little jokes, pictures, or videos, I guess. They get passed around faster than gossip at a church social. One minute it’s just somethin’ silly, next thing you know, everyone and their dog’s seen it. They say if you wanna make one of these things go “viral,” you gotta know who you’re talkin’ to. Like, my grandkids, they like different stuff than their momma. So you make different memes for different folks I reckon.
The young’uns today, they call ’em “Gen Z.” Bless their hearts, they got their own way of laughin’. Then there’s them “millennials,” a bit older, they like different jokes, I suppose. It’s all about knowin’ your audience, like knowin’ whether folks like their coffee black or with cream and sugar. If you want your meme to really take off, you gotta make somethin’ folks wanna share with their friends. That’s how it gets viral, don’t cha know?
And where do you put these viral memes? Well, there’s this thing called “Reddit,” and “Twitter,” sounds like a bird chirpin’, and “Instagram” where folks share their pictures. Even somethin’ called “TikTok,” it’s like a little clock or somethin’. My grandkids, they use all of ’em. You put your meme on there, add some words they call “hashtags,” like pound signs with words after ’em, and hope for the best. Like plantin’ seeds and hopin’ for rain, I suppose.
Now, if you really wanna get fancy, you can get one of them “influencers” to share your meme. These are folks with lots of friends on the internet, I guess. Like the popular kids in school, but on the picture box. If they share your meme, then all their friends see it, and their friends’ friends, and so on. Like a big ol’ family reunion, but online.
But here’s the thing about these viral memes, you gotta make ’em good. They gotta be funny, or interestin’, or somethin’ that catches folks’ attention. Like a shiny button on a new dress. You gotta keep up with what’s popular, too. Like knowin’ what kind of pie everyone wants at the bake sale. If everyone’s makin’ apple, maybe you should make peach, somethin’ a little different, you see?

They tell me these things were big in 2022, these meme things. It’s 2024 now, time sure does fly, don’t it? My old bones don’t move as fast as they used to, but that internet, it sure does move fast. Every day there is something new. Even that one lady said something about viral challenges. Whatever those are. The internet sure is a mystery.
These internet memes, they’re a real phenomenon, I tell ya. It’s like nothin’ I ever seen before. But I guess that’s the way of the world now. Everything’s changin’, faster than the weather in springtime. Just gotta try to keep up, I suppose. Even us old folks gotta learn new tricks, eh?
Here are some things I think I learned about making a viral meme:
- Know who you’re talkin’ to: Young folks, old folks, they all like different things.
- Make it good: Gotta be funny or interestin’, like a good story at a potluck.
- Share it around: Put it on them internet places, like Reddit and TikTok.
- Get help from them influencers: They can spread it around like butter on bread.
- Keep up with the times: What’s popular now might not be popular tomorrow.
So, there you have it. That’s what I reckon about these viral memes. It ain’t rocket science, but it ain’t exactly a walk in the park either. Just gotta use your common sense, I guess, and a little bit of luck. And who knows, maybe even an old timer like me can make somethin’ go viral on that internet contraption. Wouldn’t that be somethin’? Now, if you’ll excuse me, I think I hear my grandkids callin’. They probably got another one of them memes to show me. Lord help us all.
