Okay, so, I’ve been wanting to do this for a while, and I finally went for it. I put together a Charlie Kelly costume from “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.” You know, the gang from Paddy’s Pub? Yeah, those guys. I’ve always thought Charlie was hilarious, so I decided, why not?

First, I needed to figure out what makes a Charlie costume, well, a Charlie costume. It’s not exactly rocket science, right? He’s got that whole “I live in a basement and might have eaten paint chips as a kid” vibe going on. So, it’s all about the worn-out, kinda dirty look.

I started with the clothes. I dug through my closet and found an old green hoodie. Perfect! Then I remembered I had this pair of pants that were way too small. You know the ones, but I don’t want to throw away, they might fit one day. Good thing I kept them because they worked great for this. I even made a few more tears in them to make them look extra rough, Charlie does have a unique style.

Next, I needed the shoes. I grabbed an old pair of sneakers that were falling apart at the seams. They’ve seen better days, let me tell you. I scuffed them up even more on the concrete outside. I even got some dust on them to make them look like I actually live under a bridge. I think they looked pretty authentic, if I do say so myself.

Then came the fun part – the accessories. Charlie’s always got that weird, like, hobo-chic thing going on. I found an old, ratty baseball cap. It was a little too clean, so I rubbed some dirt on it. Problem solved. For the final touch, I grabbed a can of spray paint, but after thinking about it I knew I can’t bring a can of spray paint with me. So I just found an empty can and put it in my pocket to complete the look.

So, I put the whole thing on. Hoodie, tight pants, beat-up shoes, dirty hat, empty can. I looked in the mirror and I actually laughed out loud. I think I nailed it. I wouldn’t say I looked like the Grim Reaper, Skeleton, Police Officer or even a Wicked Witch, but I definitely looked like someone who would be crying wolf or a fish out of water.

  • Step 1: Find a green hoodie, preferably one that’s seen better days.
  • Step 2: Get some tight, old pants. Bonus points for holes and stains.
  • Step 3: Locate a pair of really worn-out sneakers.
  • Step 4: Dig up a dirty, old baseball cap.
  • Step 5: Find an empty spray paint can.
  • Step 6: Put it all together and embrace your inner Charlie!

It was a blast walking around like that, and even got recognized a few times, which was pretty cool. Some people might think I’m crazy or just snug as a bug in a rug, but I had a lot of fun with it.

My Thoughts

Honestly, this was way more fun than I expected. It’s not every day you get to dress up like a character from your favorite show. And it was surprisingly easy to put together. Most of the stuff I already had, or could easily find lying around. If you’re a fan of “It’s Always Sunny,” I definitely recommend giving this a try. Just be prepared to get some weird looks, especially if you decide to go full Charlie and start talking about “bird law” or something. You might get a few people thinking you are an elephant in the room, and maybe you are, but so what? Have fun with it!
