Well, I’ve been meaning to share my experience with this for a while, so here goes. I’ve always been a bit of a fragrance fanatic, you know? Love trying out new scents, figuring out what works best for me.
So, the other day, I was browsing around online, just window shopping for colognes, and I stumbled upon this thing called Derrick perfume. It’s made by some company called Orlane, never heard of them before, but the description sounded kinda interesting. It said something about it being a “sweet and powdery fougre, light and open – in the style of Azzaro – but less aromatic.” Tarragon is in there, too. I had to look up what a “fougre” was – apparently, it’s some type of fragrance family. Learned something new every day, right?
I dug a little deeper, found some more details on the perfume. It was released back in 1978, so it’s been around for a while. Apparently, it’s got all sorts of stuff in it, like thyme, lavender, rosemary, pepper. I mean it’s a whole garden, you know? I’m not exactly a fragrance expert, but I like trying new things, so I thought, “what the heck, let’s give it a shot.”
I also read about this other one called Derrick Absolute Gold, also by Orlane. This one’s a bit different, more of an “Oriental Woody” fragrance, whatever that means. It’s got cinnamon, orange, pink pepper, even nutmeg in it! Sounds like it would smell like a spicy Christmas cookie or something. I was tempted to try this one too, but I figured I’d start with the original Derrick first.
- I saw another one called Derrick Blue. But this one’s a floral and fruity. Not really what I’m going for right now.
- I also saw Derrick Pour Elle for women. Top notes are orange, violet and black currant. Sounds sweet but I’m looking for myself.
I found a few reviews online, and people seem to like it. One guy said he got a bottle a few months ago and it’s “fantastic.” Another one gave it a rating of 3.33 out of 5, which isn’t bad, I guess.
So, I finally decided to pull the trigger and ordered myself a bottle of the Derrick.
It arrived a few days later, and I gotta say, I was pretty excited to try it out. I sprayed a little on my wrist, and my first impression was… it’s different. Definitely not like anything I’ve worn before. It’s kind of hard to describe, but it’s definitely got that powdery vibe they talked about. It’s not too strong, which is good. I don’t like those colognes that just smack you in the face, you know? This one’s more subtle.
I’ve been wearing it for a few weeks now, and I’m still not sure how I feel about it. Some days I like it, some days I’m not so sure. It’s definitely growing on me though. I get the fougre thing now – it’s like, a bit herbal, a bit fresh, kinda hard to pin down. The tarragon is in there, I can smell it, but it’s not overpowering.
Final Thoughts
Overall, I’d say Derrick is an interesting fragrance. It’s not for everyone, that’s for sure. If you’re into those really strong, musky colognes, this probably isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for something a little different, something a little more subtle and complex, then it might be worth checking out. I don’t know if it’ll become my go-to scent, but it’s definitely a nice change of pace. And who knows, maybe I’ll give that Derrick Absolute Gold a try next. Spicy Christmas cookie, here I come! Or maybe I’ll try another of the Orlane ones. Just wish they gave a little more info on when they were made and if they’re still making them. Oh well!
