Okay, so, I’ve been messing around with this Garmin MARQ Athlete watch for a bit now, and I gotta say, it’s a pretty wild ride. This thing is like the luxury car of smartwatches, you know? It’s built with titanium, which is a fancy word for “super tough and light.” It’s also got this AMOLED screen that’s bright and easy to see, even when I’m out in the sun, sweating like crazy.

The first thing I did was take it out of the box and strap it on. It felt good on my wrist, not too heavy, not too light. Then I started playing around with the touchscreen. I had to do some digging to find how to turn it on, it’s off by default for exercise features. This part was a bit of a pain, had to dig through a bunch of menus.

After that, I started exploring all the features. This thing has profiles for everything! I mean, seriously, trail running, swimming, regular running, biking, hiking… you name it. I mostly used it for running and biking, and it tracked everything like a champ. It even has maps built-in, which is super handy when I’m exploring new trails. It was so easy to use.

One thing I noticed is that it uses the same heart rate sensor as some of Garmin’s other watches, like the Fenix 7. That’s a good thing because it means the heart rate tracking is pretty accurate. I compared it to my old chest strap, and it was almost always spot on. It felt reliable and the readings were quick to be displayed on the screen.

Now, this watch is expensive. Like, really expensive. But I guess that’s because it’s made with all these premium materials and it’s built to last. It’s water-resistant up to 100 meters, which is great because I’m a klutz and I’ve dropped it in water a few times already. No damage, so that was a plus.

I’ve been using it to track my workouts, and it’s been really helpful for seeing my progress. I can look at all my stats, like my VO2 max and my training load, and see how I’m improving over time. It’s a bit overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty cool.

Using it for training

Then there’s the training aspect. Since this watch is jam-packed with metrics and data, I figured, why not use it to train for something specific? I signed up for a half-marathon a while back, and the MARQ has been instrumental in helping me get ready. The training plans you can load onto it are intense but effective. There were days I felt like my legs were going to fall off, but I was making progress.

  • Pushed me beyond my limits: The watch doesn’t just tell you what to do; it pushes you. It’s like having a personal coach on your wrist.
  • Detailed metrics: After every workout, I’d spend a good amount of time just poring over the data. It’s fascinating to see how much effort I’m putting in and how my body is responding.

All in all, the Garmin MARQ Athlete is a beast of a smartwatch. It’s tough, it’s packed with features, and it’s definitely not for the faint of heart (or wallet). But if you’re serious about your fitness and you want a watch that can keep up with you, this might just be the one for you. I’m glad I got to try it out, and I’m excited to see what else I can do with it.

I keep on using it and update my training plan for more events and it is awesome, I feel it like my personal coach!
