Okay, so I’ve got this Portland Leather purse, and I’m wondering if I can use my regular leather shoe protector on it. I mean, leather is leather, right? But this purse is kind of special, and I don’t want to mess it up.

I did some digging online. Seems like some folks say shoe polish can be used on leather purses to bring back the color and shine. That’s cool, but I’m more worried about protection from rain and stuff. Plus, I don’t want to change the color of my purse. The advice is to test it on a small area first, which makes sense. I definitely don’t want any weird discoloration.
I also saw that different types of leather need different cleaning stuff. My purse is just regular leather, not suede or anything fancy. But there’s this thing about “clogging the pores” of the leather if you use a waterproofing spray or wax. That sounds bad, like the leather won’t be able to “breathe” or something. I don’t want a stiff, suffocated purse!
Then I remembered I have this Cole Haan Suede and Leather Protector spray that I use on my boots. The bottle says it’s safe for most suede and leather items, including bags and even furniture. Hmm, this might actually work. They recommend spraying a light coat from about 8-10 inches away for water resistance.
So, I decided to give it a shot. First, I cleaned the purse with a damp cloth to get rid of any dust or dirt. Then, I took a deep breath and sprayed a very light coat of the protector on a tiny spot on the bottom of the purse where no one would see it. I held the spray about 8 inches away like the bottle said.
I waited a few minutes, and… nothing. No discoloration, no weird texture, no nothing. It looked exactly the same. Okay, that’s a good sign. Feeling a little braver, I went ahead and sprayed the entire purse, making sure to keep it light and even. I think I did a good job not making it too wet.

I let it dry for a couple of hours. And guess what? It worked! The purse still looks and feels great, but now I feel like it has a little extra protection from the elements. I even spilled a little water on it, and it just beaded up and rolled right off. Success!
Here’s what I learned from this little experiment:
- It seems like you can use some shoe protectors on leather purses, but it’s super important to test it first!
- Read the label on the protector to make sure it’s safe for the type of leather you have.
- Less is more. Spray a light, even coat, and don’t soak the leather.
- If you’re unsure, maybe try to look for a protector made specifically for purses.
Anyway, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out. Now I can carry my Portland Leather purse with a little more peace of mind, even if it starts to drizzle. But, like I said, always test it first! Don’t blame me if your purse turns purple or something.
