Today, I wanna talk about my little journey with something called a “royal tapestry”. I saw this term in a book and got curious. What’s that? So, I did some digging. Turns out, these things have been around for ages, like, since kings and queens ruled the lands. I also found out that famous ones include the Bayeux Tapestry, The Apocalypse Tapestry and The Hunt of the Unicorn series. Tapestries were even used to decorate castles and stuff back in the medieval days. And get this – they were even found in ancient Egyptian tombs and with the Incas!

So, I thought, “Why not give it a shot?” I mean, I’ve always been a crafty person. First things first, I needed supplies. I found out that I needed a loom, but I didn’t wanna buy one. Luckily, I found a guide online that showed how to make one from an old photo frame. How cool is that? Then there’s the yarn. I had some lying around from an old knitting project, figured it’d work just fine.
Next, I had to learn the basics. I watched a bunch of videos and read some articles. I got the hang of warping the loom, which is basically setting up the vertical threads. It was kinda tricky at first, ngl, but I got there in the end. Then came the fun part – weaving! I started with simple patterns, just going over and under with the weft yarn. It was so relaxing, like, really therapeutic.
My Weaving Journey
- Getting Started: I spent a whole afternoon just practicing the basic weave. My fingers were kinda clumsy at first, but I kept at it. It was like learning to ride a bike – wobbly at first, but then you get the rhythm.
- Experimenting with Colors: Once I felt comfortable, I started playing around with different colored yarns. I made stripes, blocks, and even tried some simple shapes. It was so much fun seeing my little tapestry come to life, one row at a time.
- The Big Project: After a few weeks of practice, I decided to tackle a bigger project. I sketched out a simple design of a flower. It was definitely more challenging than the practice pieces, but I was determined to finish it.
It took me a while, but I finally finished my flower tapestry! It’s not perfect, of course. There are a few wonky bits here and there, but I’m so proud of it. I hung it up on my wall, and it just adds such a cozy vibe to the room.
Honestly, this whole tapestry thing has been such a cool experience. It’s not just about making something pretty, it’s about connecting with history and, you know, slowing down a bit. In this fast-paced world, it’s nice to have a hobby that forces you to take your time and just focus on the present moment. Plus, it’s super satisfying to create something with your own two hands. If you’re looking for a new hobby, I totally recommend giving tapestry weaving a try. It might seem a bit intimidating at first, but trust me, it’s easier than you think!
