Well, let me tell ya ’bout these shiny rocks, they call ’em sphenes. Never heard of ’em before, but folks say they’re somethin’ special.

Now, some big shot fella, Napoleon somethin’-or-other, he liked these sphenes a whole lot. Said it brought him luck, like a lucky rabbit’s foot, ya know? Guess even them fancy pants folks like a little somethin’ shiny to carry around.
These sphenes, they ain’t just any old rocks. They sparkle like the dickens! Shiny like a firefly on a summer night. And the colors, oh my! They got all sorts, yellow, orange, green, all shimmery and bright. Like a rainbow got trapped inside a little pebble.
- They say sphenes are kinda soft, not like diamonds.
- But they shine real bright, almost like a diamond.
- Some folks who know rocks, the miner- somethin’ folks, they call ’em titanite. Fancy name, huh?
They got this Greek name, too. Sphenos, somethin’ like that. Means wedge. Guess some of them rocks look like little wedges, ya know, like the ones you use to split wood.
Now, I ain’t no expert, but I hear these sphenes ain’t cheap. They’re what they call semi-precious. Not like them rubies and sapphires, but still worth a pretty penny, I reckon.
And get this, some folks think these rocks can make you smarter. Learn faster, they say. Now, I ain’t sure about that. I learned plenty without no fancy rocks, let me tell ya. But maybe for them young’uns, it might help. Who knows?

People who like these shiny things, they like the light-colored ones the best. Yellow, light orange, and green ones. Guess they’re prettier or somethin’. Me, I like anything that shines, long as it ain’t too gaudy.
So, these sphenes, they’re pretty rocks, huh? Shiny, colorful, and got a fancy name. Folks seem to like ’em, and that Napoleon fella, he sure did. Maybe they got some special powers, maybe they don’t. But one thing’s for sure, they’re somethin’ to look at. Makes you wonder how somethin’ so pretty comes outta the ground.
Like I said, I ain’t never seen one of these sphenes up close, but I seen enough rocks in my day. Used to pick ’em up out of the fields when I was a young’un. Never thought they’d be worth nothin’. Guess I shoulda held onto some of them shiny ones, huh? Mighta been rich by now! But then again, what would an old woman like me do with all that money? Probably just buy more chickens. A woman can never have too many chickens, ya know?
So, that’s the story on sphenes, as best as I can tell ya. They’re pretty, they’re shiny, and some folks think they’re special. If you ever see one, take a good look. Might be the prettiest rock you ever did see. And who knows, maybe it’ll make you smarter. But don’t go spendin’ all your hard-earned money on ’em, now. There’s more important things in life than shiny rocks, like a good cup of coffee and a warm biscuit on a cold mornin’. That’s what I say.
