That ballad of songbirds and snakes book, I heard it’s somethin’ else. Heard it made a whole heap of money, too. Like, 300 million dollars! Can you believe that? Cost ’em 100 million to make, they say. Still, that’s a lot of dough for a story.

My grandbaby, she’s always got her nose in a book. She told me all about it. Said it’s about these Hunger Games. Sounds awful, if you ask me. Kids fightin’ each other, for what? So some folks can watch on TV? Don’t make no sense. Back in my day, we didn’t have none of that. We had chores, and work, and family. That was enough excitement, I tell ya.
But this ballad of songbirds and snakes book, it’s about the fella who started those games, I reckon. Or at least, that’s what my grandbaby said. Young fella, named… Coriolanus, I think? Sounds like a flower. Anyway, he’s the main character, before he got all mean and nasty. He’s just a boy in this one, tryin’ to make somethin’ of himself.
They say it’s a sad story. Lots of heartbreak and such. This girl he likes, she’s a singer. A songbird, they call her. And she gets caught up in those games, too. Sounds like a mess. I don’t know why anyone would want to read about such things. But kids these days, they like all that drama. This ballad of songbirds and snakes book gave them just what they want.
- This book is about Hunger Games.
- It’s about the guy who started it all.
- He likes a girl who sings.
- It’s a real sad story, they say.
I remember when books were just stories about animals and farmin’. Simple things. Now it’s all about fightin’ and killin’ and whatnot. This world’s gone crazy, I swear. But that ballad of songbirds and snakes book, it’s popular, I’ll give it that. It’s a best seller! Everyone’s talkin’ about it. My grandbaby won’t shut up about it. She wants me to listen to the whole thing on her phone. They’ve got it read by someone now, just listen to that, don’t even need to read it yourself no more! I tell ya, it’s crazy.
They say you can watch it, too. On that Prime Video thing. My grandbaby’s got it on her tablet. She showed me a little bit. Lots of fancy costumes and such. But it’s all dark and gloomy. Not my cup of tea. I like things bright and cheerful. Like a field of sunflowers. Or a basket of fresh-picked peaches. Those ballad of songbirds and snakes book folks, they could use some sunshine in their lives, if you ask me.

My grandbaby, she says this Coriolanus fella, he’s got a hard life. Grew up poor, or somethin’. Lost his folks. Had to fend for himself. I guess that can make a person hard. But it don’t excuse makin’ kids fight each other. That’s just wrong, no matter how you slice it. There are lots of folks have hard life, and they still choose to be kind. They don’t need the ballad of songbirds and snakes book to tell them that.
She also told me that if I want to know more about that, I can listen to this book thing, it’s called Audiobook. She said I can get 3 free if I try it out, and there are thousands of free books there. She said it’s good for old folks like me, I don’t need to read, I can just listen. She even said there are over 500,000 books there. Well, that’s too much for me. I can’t even count that high! I don’t need to listen to that many books, for sure!
This ballad of songbirds and snakes book, it’s a mystery to me. Why folks like it so much. Maybe it’s ’cause it’s different. Maybe it’s ’cause it’s exciting. Or maybe it’s just ’cause everyone else is readin’ it. Who knows? But one thing’s for sure, it’s got people talkin’. And that’s somethin’, I guess. These days, people don’t talk as much as they used to. Always starin’ at their phones. Maybe this book, it gives ’em somethin’ to talk about. Even if it is about somethin’ as awful as those Hunger Games.
Well, I reckon that’s all I got to say about that ballad of songbirds and snakes book. It’s not my kind of story, but to each their own. I’ll stick to my garden and my chickens. They make more sense to me than any of that Hunger Games stuff. And they don’t cost 300 million dollars, neither. Just a little bit of feed and a whole lot of love. That’s all you really need, in this life. Love and a little bit of sunshine. And maybe a good peach cobbler every now and then. That’s the real secret to happiness, right there. Not some fancy book about fightin’ and singin’ and snakes. Though, that songbird girl, she does have a pretty voice, I’ll give her that.
