Okay, so, I’ve been trying to get my nails to look decent for more than a few days without them chipping like crazy. I heard about this “no chip top coat” thing and figured I’d give it a shot. Honestly, I’m not one for fancy nail stuff, but I was getting tired of redoing my nails every other day.

First, I went and looked for some no chip top coats, there are tons of them online! I ended up picking up a couple to try: one was called Barry M Cosmetics Plumpy Topcoat, and the other was Rimmel London Super Gel Top Coat. The Barry M one said it’s long-lasting and stops chips, plus adds a glossy finish. The Rimmel one claimed it could last up to 14 days without chipping. Sounded too good to be true, but hey, I was willing to try anything.
Before I started, I made sure my nails were clean and filed, you know, the usual stuff. Then I put on my regular nail polish. I’m not about that gel or acrylic life, just regular polish for me. Once that was dry, I slapped on the Barry M topcoat.
- Application: It went on pretty smooth, not too thick or goopy.
- Drying Time: Took a bit to dry, but nothing crazy. I just watched some videos while I waited.
- First Impression: It definitely looked shinier than my usual topcoat, kind of like those gel nails but without all the fuss.
I wore that for a few days and it held up pretty well! I mean, I wasn’t doing anything too crazy, just regular daily stuff, but usually, my nails would have at least a couple of chips by now. This time, nothing. I was impressed. It did not last for 14 days, but it is much better than the normal topcoat I used before.
After about five days, I took that polish off and tried the Rimmel one. Same routine – clean nails, regular polish, then the Rimmel topcoat. This one felt a bit thicker when I put it on, but it still dried okay. This one also made my nails look super shiny, like they were thicker or something.
Honestly, the Rimmel one was about the same as the Barry M one. It lasted a good few days without any major chipping. I even did some gardening, and my nails still looked alright. I was pretty stoked about that.

My Verdict:
These no chip top coats are way better than my old one. They make my nails look shinier and they really do help prevent chips. They’re not magic or anything, I still got a tiny chip here and there after a while, but it’s a huge improvement. If you’re like me and just want your regular nail polish to last a bit longer without looking like you’ve been digging in the dirt, these are worth trying. Plus, they’re not expensive, so it’s not a big deal if you don’t like them. But I think I’ll be using these from now on!
