Well, let me tell you, 2014, that was a year, huh? 2014 fashion trends, they called it. Fashion! Back in my day, we wore what kept us warm in the winter and cool in the summer. But these young folks, they got all sorts of ideas.

They had these, what do you call ’em? Crop tops. Yeah, crop tops. Showin’ off their bellies like it’s nobody’s business. I seen ’em all over, these young girls, walkin’ around like they own the place. And the colors! Lord, the colors. Bright, bright, like a rainbow threw up on ’em. Not like the good old days. We had our browns, our blues, sensible colors.
And then, somethin’ called “athleisure.” Sounded like a disease to me at first. They wearin’ their workout clothes, like they just came from the gym. But they ain’t sweatin’. Just walkin’ around. Lazy, I call it. We used to change after we finished the chores. Now they just wear them tight pants all day long. These 2014 fashion trends are weird.
And don’t even get me started on them dresses, these “high-low” things. Long in the back, short in the front. What’s the sense in that? You’re either gonna be cold or you’re not. Pick one! And lace! Everything’s got lace on it. Lace on their dresses, lace on their shirts, lace on their shoes. Looks like they raided a doily factory, I swear. Lace dresses were popular.
- Crop tops, showing off bellies.
- Athleisure, wearing gym clothes everywhere.
- High-low skirts, long in the back, short in the front.
- Lots and lots of bright colors.
- Lace on everything, like a doily factory exploded.
I saw some pictures, too. These fancy people, Lady Gaga, always wearing something crazy. And Kate Middleton, now she’s a proper lady. Always lookin’ nice and neat. But even she got caught up in some of these trends. Everyone did that year, seem like. Vogue talked about them, all those famous people.
And the young people, they got their own thing. This “Tumblr” thing. They were wearing them jackets made of denim. Jean jackets. We used to wear those for work! And them tight necklaces, chokers they call ’em. Looked like they was chokin’ themselves. And big ol’ boots. Like they’re goin’ to war or something. These kids these days, I tell ya. They call it Tumblr aesthetic, whatever that means.

They like old things, too. Old cartoons, old games. They call it “nostalgia.” Means they miss the old days, I reckon. Even though they weren’t even born yet! Funny, ain’t it? Nostalgia marketing was a big thing that year, they said. All those old characters come back again, like new.
And they always on their phones, makin’ jokes about everything. “Satire,” they call it. Making fun of things, all the time. Even on the TV. Everything’s a joke to them. We used to have respect, you know? Satirical social media, that’s what it was. Big trend.
They had these suits, too. For ridin’ bikes. Looked like they was painted on. Showed everything, I mean everything. Folks was all riled up about them. Said it wasn’t decent. I agree. There’s a time and a place for everything. Them flesh panelled cycling suits were somethin’ else. Colombian, they were. Caused quite a stir, those did.
So, yeah, 2014. A year for crazy clothes. Bright colors, short shirts, long skirts, lace, old things made new, jokes about everything. And them tight bike suits. Lord have mercy. It was a sight to see, I tell ya. A real sight to see. These 2014 fashion trends were definitely something to remember, even if I don’t understand them all.
Kids, they just wear anything. The fashion trend in 2014 just made no sense sometimes. I think people like to wear things, just to show off. They don’t care if it is good looking or not, if it is good for work or not. They just wear it. What do you think?

The fashion, I think, it is just a circle. My grandma said that too. It just goes around, and around. The things we think are old, they become new again. Maybe I will start wearing my old clothes, save some money. Maybe I will be in fashion again too! Who knows! Fashion trends, I don’t understand them. But they are fun to watch, I will say that. They sure are fun to watch.
