Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about them dresses, the ones they call “too short.” I seen a whole lot of dresses in my time, and let me tell ya, times have changed. Back in my day, a dress was a dress, and it covered what it needed to cover. Now, these young gals, they wearin’ things that barely cover their behinds! Makes an old woman like me blush, I tell ya.
What’s all this fuss about “dress too short” anyway? Folks get all worked up about it, sayin’ it ain’t proper, ain’t respectful. And you know, maybe they got a point. I remember my grandma tellin’ me, a lady should dress like a lady. That meant coverin’ up, not showin’ off everything you got. But these days, it’s like the less you wear, the better. I don’t get it, I really don’t.
Now, I ain’t sayin’ everyone gotta dress like a nun. Heck, I like to see a pretty dress as much as the next person. But there’s a difference between lookin’ nice and lookin’ like you forgot half your clothes at home. You know what I mean? It’s like they tryin’ too hard to get attention. And for what? A few whistles from some young fellas? That ain’t worth nothin’, trust me on that.
I saw this girl the other day, at the store, wearin’ a dress that was so short, I swear I could see her bloomers! And she was walkin’ around like she was the queen of somethin’. Now, I ain’t judgin’, but I couldn’t help but think, “Honey, your mama didn’t teach you nothin’?” My mama woulda tanned my hide if I walked out the house lookin’ like that. But I guess times are different now.
- Skirts and dresses should be a decent length. You know, somethin’ that covers your knees, at least. Ain’t nobody wanna see all that.
- Shirts shouldn’t be too tight or too low. Leave somethin’ to the imagination, I always say.
- Keep the jewelry and makeup simple. You ain’t goin’ to a circus.
- Wear decent shoes. Not them high heels that make you wobble around like a newborn calf.
And it ain’t just the young girls, either. I’ve seen women my age wearin’ things that ain’t fittin’. Just because you can squeeze into it, don’t mean you should wear it. There’s a time and a place for everything, and a skimpy dress ain’t always the right choice. You gotta think about where you goin’, who you gonna see. You wouldn’t wear a fancy dress to go feed the chickens, would ya? Same goes for wearin’ somethin’ too short to church. It just ain’t right.
I heard someone talkin’ about buyin’ a dress for a boat trip, and then worryin’ it was too short after they got it home. Well, that’s what happens when you don’t think things through! You gotta try it on before you buy it, see how it looks, see how it feels. And if it’s too short, don’t buy it! It’s that simple. There’s plenty of other dresses out there, ones that’ll cover you up proper.
Sometimes, you can fix a dress that’s too short, though. I’ve seen folks add a little fabric to the bottom, make it longer. Or you can wear somethin’ underneath, like leggings or tights. But honestly, it’s easier to just buy a dress that fits right in the first place. Save yourself the trouble, I say.
People say clothes don’t make the person. And maybe that’s true, to a point. But they sure do say somethin’ about you. If you dress like you don’t respect yourself, folks ain’t gonna respect you either. It’s just the way it is. So, think about that before you put on that dress that barely covers your behind. Ask yourself, “Is this really how I want to be seen?”
Whether you’re goin’ to some fancy party, or just out with your friends, you gotta dress yourself like you got some sense. Don’t let them fashion magazines tell you different. They just tryin’ to sell you somethin’. You listen to your grandma, or to an old woman like me, and you’ll be just fine. Dress yourself decent, and you’ll feel good about yourself, and folks will treat you with respect. And that’s more important than any short dress.
